Authors Sean Platt and David W. Wright have made it as writers by giving away tens of thousands of books of their post-apocalyptic serial Yesterdays Gone. and are saying thank you to their readers with a free Kindle Fire giveaway.
By using a freemium style business model, of using free books to attract regular paying readers, the writing duo have pushed sales of all their titles, allowing them to work at writing fiction full-time.
Freemium is hardly a new concept, said Platt. We learned a lot as we were coming up from writers like J.A. Konrath, Cory Doctorow, and Scott Sigler, who have all seen great success by giving their content away.
By giving their titles away via Smashwords, Barnes and Noble, Apple, and using Amazons KDP Select program, which allows authors to mark books down to free five days during a 90 day period, Platt and Wright have given away most of their catalog at one time or another. In doing so, theyve attracted a large following of readers who connect with what theyre doing. Amazon readers have left more than 200 Five Star reviews for the Yesterdays Gone series to date.
Platt and Wright are aiming to become Kings of the Serial with an ambitious publishing schedule of one book (ranging from 12,000 to 25,000 words each) per week in 2012.
Weve always wanted to write serials, said Wright. Before Amazon changed the publishing game, we would have never attracted a publisher willing to take a chance on serializing two unknown authors. But now writers can reach, and develop, their audiences in a way unlike ever before. We knew this was the shot wed been waiting for.
Platt and Wright dont just serialize a full book, however.
They treat their serials like TV shows, with seasons made up of six books, or episodes each, which they sell for .99 (U.S.) each during the season. After they complete a season, they compile the full season into one large compilation, which they publish for $ 4.99. So far this year, theyve published Yesterdays Gone: Season Two, the young adult paranormal serial, ForNevermore, and are set to release the first episode of their newest adult horror serial, WhiteSpace in two weeks.
Platt and Wright are saying thank you to their readers with their first contest, giving away a free Kindle Fire.
